Advanced webinar on patents: A key tool for strategic intelligence in the digital era

Björn M. Jürgens is a recognized expert at both national and European levels in the fields of technological intelligence and intellectual property. Jürgens holds a PhD in Documentation from the University of Granada and a Diploma in Information Management from the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, Germany. Currently, he serves as a Senior Expert at the Regional Center for Industrial Property Information of the Business Agency for Transformation and Economic Development of Andalusia (TRADE). He is an active member of the PATLIB Center and the Enterprise Europe Network of the European Union, and he is Spain’s ambassador to the EU IP Helpdesk. Additionally, he holds the QPIP (Qualified Patent Information Professional) certification.

Jürgens brings extensive experience in patent search and analysis, training in technological surveillance, and promotion of transnational technology transfer. Beyond his professional career, he has participated in numerous research projects and collaborations with academic and governmental institutions in Spain and Europe, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the field of patent intelligence and its application to foster sustainable territorial development through strategic industrial property application.

As part of #InteligenciaUA, during the third phase of the course, Jürgens will deliver a two-hour webinar aimed at providing participants with the necessary tools and knowledge to conduct advanced patent searches and analyze acquired information, thereby enhancing their monitoring and intelligence strategies. Like other activities in the course, the practical approach of this virtual workshop will enable attending companies, entrepreneurs, and professionals to directly apply their learnings to final projects and professional contexts.

IntelligenceUA 2024-2025:

#IntelligenceUA is the University of Alicante’s certified specialization program in strategic intelligence, offered in a hybrid format combining virtual and in-person training. Spanning 150 hours and granting 6 ECTS credits, the program is structured into three stages: distance learning modules, an intensive practical workshop, and the development of a supervised final project. The course will be taught by a diverse team of 15 academic and professional experts in technology scouting and strategic intelligence, integrating the latest industry advancements.

This edition of the course introduces additional instructors and new activities to provide comprehensive, hands-on training adapted to evolving environments. Key updates include leveraging generative artificial intelligence for enhanced decision-making, crafting effective communication strategies within surveillance and intelligence systems, and exploring strategic information sources such as technology marketplaces and advanced patent search and analysis.

Since its inception, the course has trained over 150 professionals across various sectors and countries, benefiting universities, startups, knowledge transfer offices, corporate R&D units, and other public and private institutions in leveraging surveillance and intelligence for their technological and innovation strategies.

Why is strategic intelligence important?

In a world where information and data are crucial resources, the ability to conduct effective technology scouting and strategic intelligence has become indispensable as a source of strategic advantages for competing in the market.

It involves implementing systematic processes of gathering, analyzing, and communicating valuable information to enhance organizational decision-making, mitigate risks, seize opportunities, and anticipate changes. This enables organizations to stay informed, monitor competitors and markets, adapt to constant change, and above all, lead the charge for innovation in their sector.

What will you learn from this course?

The main objective of this training program is to equip companies, entrepreneurs, and professionals with specialized skills in strategic intelligence and technology scouting, emphasizing the critical roles of strategic management and the management of knowledge and intellectual capital in innovative organizations. To achieve this, #IntelligenceUA’s curriculum will focus on four thematic modules:

  1. Strategic management.
  2. Knowledge management and intellectual capital.
  3. Strategic implementation.
  4. Strategic intelligence.

How does this course work?

#IntelligenceUA will be delivered through a participative, flexible, and hybrid methodology (both in-person and virtual), allowing participants to engage from anywhere and at their own pace. The training program comprises three phases:

  1. Virtual Phase: Starting on October 7, 2024, this phase will be conducted via the course’s virtual learning platform. Participants will delve into applied fundamentals through lessons, activities, and virtual discussions.
  2. Workshop Phase: From February 3 to February 7, 2025, the Strategic Intelligence Workshop for Innovative Organizations will take place at the University of Alicante. This intensive week will focus on practical learning through workshops and panels with surveillance and intelligence experts. Participants will gain insights into designing and prioritizing surveillance systems, exploring information sources and specialized tools, leveraging the latest developments in artificial intelligence, producing analyses, and devising effective dissemination and communication strategies for maximum impact.
  3. Final Project Phase: From February 10 to July 31, 2025, participants will develop their final projects. They will receive guidance and tutorial support from professors, along with specialized webinars focusing on advanced patent search and market technology strategies.
